Steps Towards Change

1.png

I have dedicated over 30+ years to York City, Schools, Churches, Community, and Businesses, as a Clergy Member and Youth Pastor, Entrepreneur, Activist and World Traveler. Below are my brief thoughts on issues that impact our community, please get in contact to learn more about where I stand and how I'd like to be the voice of the community as we work towards advancing York City.

Improving Education

Including educators and staff with York City roots in classrooms improves student-faculty and student-staff relations. Whether that be alumni substitutes, full-time faculty, or security, our students deserve relationships built on common ground. We need better community involvement with the York City School Board--to hold staff accountable, to implement decisions that best serve all students, and uplift priorities deemed important to community members. I ran and won the seat on City Council to be a community voice for the issues we face together.

Youth Programming

In my youth, I remember programs at Crispus Attucks, Voni Grimes Gym, Lighthouse, and Penn Park that supported healthy physical activity, home economics, life skills, professional development, and skills training. We need this back in our communities for the betterment of youth development and to serve as a pipeline for the next generation of community leadership. Taking karate classes inspired me to obtain my black belt in my youth and then later as an adult provide those same opportunities across York County.

Access to Resources

Food security. Job security. Homelessness. Mental Health. Child Welfare, and more. There are many issues we face as a community. When we, as professionals and community members, focus on preventative services and holistic health, we rise. As a child welfare alumna and clergy member, I know what it means to overcome hardships and the difference a hands-up approach can make in someone’s life. We have to put in the work with boots on the ground, one step at a time, TOGETHER.

I have worked with Dr. Dennis through a nonprofit that centered on empowering our local youth. She has shown, by example, a spirit of co-operation, enthusiasm and genuine care for York City residents and the community at large.  Her boots on the ground campaign motto is an active way of life for her.

"MY PASSION AND CALLING IS TO SERVE

AND SUPPORT THE PEOPLE."

I’m passionate about the community, as well as supporting and advocating for youth and families. Serving the community unselfishly is what I do; as a clergy member and youth pastor, as the owner of Felicia’s Tae Kwon Do, Thou Art & Nature Products and as community activist (both national and internationally). In the mornings, I work in the York City School District’s Safety and Security Department. Most evenings, I was working for the City of York as an ecosystem coordinator, assisting residents with resource finding before transitioning into my current position as a Council Member on Tuesday, January 4, 2022. All while managing businesses and hosting events that uplift and serve the community. While working for Military Sealift Command as a merchant mariner, located at the Norfolk, Virginia US Navy Base, I traveled internationally and honed my leadership skills.

Now that I'm elected, I’ll be another voice for our community; pushing forward new initiatives and seeking to add positive impacts that put York families first—working with you and residents to bring back hope and healing in York.

I, Felicia O. A. Dennis, am a native of York City, Pennsylvania. My goal is to continue to serve the community to the best of my ability, assist with the creation of laws, and aid with the approval of the York City Budget—ensuring decisions makes sense and meet the needs of community members.
